"Pitch" at the Adelphi Riverside Bar

Article 04.08.2012 13:32

Jazz Duo, "Pitch" will be performing at the Adelphi Riverside Bar in the Tower Hotel on Wednesday 8th August for the first time.

At the Tower Hotel cool jazz is the order of the day as jazz duo “Pitch” play in the Adelphi Riverside Bar at the Tower Hotel this Wednesday from 9pm for the first time. Though you may not have heard of the duo before, they are both busy  established musicians in their own right and come together in duo format on a regular basis to suit the occasion. They call themselves “Pitch” and this may be a musical reference to the height or depth of a musical sound or it may be that black, tarry substance that, like their music, is rich, dark and smooth and binds everything together. However, “Pitch” is also a simple blending of Pat & Mitch!

Mitch will be joined by South Kilkenny man Pat O’Connor who, like many students of De La Salle College Waterford, was first introduced to music education by Brother Ben Hanlon. It was through his encouragement that Pat took up bass guitar and joined the schools award winning senior choir at age 16. From performing in musicals, the choir and numerous bands it became clear to him that his passion lay in music and to this end he entered the W.I.T in 2009, studying in the B.A Music degree course.

In his first degree year, Pat began playing piano and found that he had a greater interest in the instrument than bass and eventually, through Mitch’s encouragement, Pat managed to switch his instrumental studies to Jazz Piano. Since then he has been performing in a range of different musical styles. As of last June he has been the keyboard player for ‘The Pearly Whites’, a function band that has been performing nationwide including a recent spot on The Ryan Tubridy Show.

Pat’s switch to piano has also aided him in his passion for composition, with 2 hours of orchestral music and several short film scores to his name already. His passion for composition is only matched by his deep love of Jazz and the work of pianist and composer Bill Evans and because of this Pat loves nothing more than playing his way through the great ballads of the American Songbook for any who care to hear such classics.

They’ll be playing a mixture of tunes from the Blue Note label together with jazz standards and old favourites from the American Song Book from 9:00pm; Nothing too heavy or too loud so most of the playing will be either on Flugelhorn or a muted trumpet to keep it mellow.

So, whichever way you remember their name, we hope you will enjoy the ambiance of the Adelphi Riverside Bar at the Tower Hotel and of course, the music and we hope to see “Pitch” there on a regular basis.
